What you are looking at it is the aftermath of me coating the fume hood in a thick coat of nitric acid. Oh boy, it was bad. It took me about 4 hours to clean all the acid up. For future reference, when I need to dissolve iron nitrate in ethanol it's OK to use nitric acid to help in the dissolution, but NOT OK to heat the solution up as this will lead to a runaway exothermic reaction. Said reaction will create an old faithful geyser of acid and nitrates splurting all over the fume hood to the embarrassment of nearby graduate students.
So much for nice, clean fume hood and gear. Now it's toxic waste land.
